Chapter 01
Panels get mounted through a roof, which is the part people skip
Racking is fixed through the roof plane, which means every mount is a penetration, and every penetration is a detail that has to be flashed properly or it becomes a leak.
That is a roofing job, and it is the reason it is worth having a roofing company do it. The array is straightforward. The forty or so places where it passes through your waterproofing are not.
We treat those the way we treat any other penetration on a roof, because that is exactly what they are.

Check the age of the roof before you mount anything
This is the advice we give most often, and it is the one that saves people the most money.
If your roof has only a few years left, putting an array on it means paying to remove and reinstall that array when the roof is replaced. It is far cheaper to sequence it the other way round.
If the roof is sound with plenty of life in it, panels are a good fit, and they leave you the option of taking them off and putting them back when the roof does eventually come due.
We will tell you honestly which of those two you have, including when the answer is to wait.
Chapter 03
What decides the output, and who can actually tell you
The orientation and pitch of your specific roof planes, the shading across the day and across the seasons, your household's consumption, and the terms available from your utility.
None of that can be known from a postcode, so we will not put a savings figure in front of you before we have looked at the roof. Anybody who does is guessing, and it is your money.
Panels or solar shingles
We install both, so we have no stake in which one you choose.
Panels win when the existing roof has real life left in it, when you want the maximum generation the planes can carry, or when you might move before a replacement comes due. Solar shingles win when the roof is being replaced anyway and you would rather not have racked equipment on the house.
